You can download the data files containing all of the data that I collected for my research. These files contain the criteria listed in the person specifications of the job adverts.
The data files are available in one of two formats:
- .txt (contains only the criteria; suitable for concordance software)
- .csv (contains the criteria and all of the other data I collected; suitable for spreadsheets and statistics software)
I am not making the raw data publicly available.
.txt Files
Download ‘essential’ criteria
Download ‘desirable’ criteria
Download ‘both’ criteria
To the extent possible under law, Rowan Hotham-Gough has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to .txt Files containing ‘essential’ criteria, ‘desirable’ criteria, or ‘both’ criteria.
Files are encoded using UTF-8.
The files are collected into 3 folders:
- The ‘essential’ folder contains all of the essential criteria listed in the job adverts;
- The ‘desirable’ folder contains all of the desirable criteria listed in the job adverts;
- The ‘both’ folder contains both the essential and the desirable criteria listed in the job adverts.
Each file contains the criteria listed in 1 job advert.
Every file is named using the same system. The first 3 characters of the file name are the UCAS code for the institution that advertised the job advert. The last 3 characters of the file name are the job number for the advert. For example, M40015.txt is the 15th job advert (015) at The Manchester Metropolitan University (M40).
The criteria listed in each file are separated from each other using the middle dot symbol [·
]. This symbol is placed before each criterion. The middle dot is Unicode character U+00B7.
Some criteria contain a nested list. This list always begins with introductory text. This introductory text is directly preceded by the middle dot symbol [·
]. All of the list items are placed together after the introductory text. The list items are separated from each other using the bullet symbol [•
]. This symbol is placed before each list item. The bullet is Unicode character U+2022.
Example .txt file
These are the criteria listed in text file B06010.txt.
Green text
is the introductory text to a nested list. Blue text
are list items in the nested list.
Orange text
is a criterion.
A nested list is also a criterion. 1 green line of text and all of the blue text that directly follows it are a criterion.

.csv Files
Download the CSV files
To the extent possible under law, Rowan Hotham-Gough has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to .csv Files.
Files are encoded using UTF-8.
The data is collected into 3 comma-separated values (CSV) files:
- The ‘institutions.csv’ file contains data about each institution;
- The ‘jobadverts.csv’ file contains data about each job advert listed at each institution;
- The ‘criteria.csv’ file contains data about each criterion listed in each job advert.
These files are delimited by:
- Commas for fields;
- Newlines for records.
Column headings are placed on the first line of each file.
What each column heading means
institutions.csv
